Community Potlucks, Seed & Plant Swaps & Workshops

Bring something yummy and share some good food and conversation with neighbours. We’ll have a seed library there – you can get some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds or plants. Community Seed Sharing Library and Seed Saver Club

Join West End Urban Garden Club for the official launch of our Community Seed Sharing Library and Seed Savers Club. All ages welcome! Find out how the seed library works, learn about West End Neighbourhood Food Network’s Garden Club and Village Vancouver’s seed libraries and seed saving efforts around the city, and meet fellow gardeners and seed savers. Pick up some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate seeds, and help put together seed packets for the library. Preregistration encouraged.

Advanced Seed Saving

This West End Urban Garden Club workshop is for anyone who understand the basics of seed saving. Instructors Maria Hunter and Leoni Croy will discuss topics which relate to saving more challenging food plants, such as cross pollinators (squash) and biennials such as brassicas, especially as they relate to seed saving challenges in city gardens. Bring your questions and we’ll address your seed saving issues. Pre-registration encouraged.

Beginning Seed Saving

Based on the booklet, The 5 Levels of Seed Saving, this West End Urban Garden Club workshop will focus on annual and biennial food plants. Instructors Leoni Croy and Maria Hunter will identify self-pollinators and crosspollinators, and talk about the best seeds to start saving, including the easiest seeds to save in small gardens and why, and how to harvest, dry and store seed. Making Beeswax Salves with Lori Snyder

Discover how to make beeswax salves with infused plant oils. It’s quick and easy, and beeswax salves have many different applications, including lip balms, natural skin care, hand salves and salves for wounds and sprains. Movement for Gardeners

Learn how to lift and move pots safely and how to work towards being able to be comfortable kneeling, as well as presenting strategies for getting up from the ground easily without hurting oneself. We’ll do a simple assessment of participant’s abilities in this area, teach them how to move from where they’re at, and provide guidance for progressive improvement. Advance registration encouraged.

Permaculture 101

Permaculture is a philosophy which encourages working with our natural environment instead of against it. In this West End Urban Garden Club workshop, instructor Kim Del Valle Garcia, will discuss permaculture ethics (earth care, people care, and fair shares), introduce the 12 principles of permaculture, and review practical applications in your garden. West End Urban Garden Club Holiday Gathering & Food Drive

Join us in celebrating the holiday season at our family friendly get together. We’ll provide lots of food and good cheer, as well as a few surprises. Bring something yummy to share. Food stories and board games also welcome! Food Drive – Please consider bringing a healthy, unexpired non-perishable item or two, and we’ll donate everything received to a local food agency.
