Below is the schedule of the West End Neighbourhood Food Network (WENFN) for January to March 2017.

Community Potluck, Seed & Plant Swap & Workshop

Join West End Neighbourhood Food Network and Village Vancouver at our monthly family friendly gatherings. Bring something yummy and share some good food and conversation with neighbours. We’ll have a seed library there – you can get some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds or plants. Each month we present a mini-workshop on a different food and/or gardening related topic: January – Finding the Best Seeds for Your Garden, February – Pollinators, March – Understanding Packaged Soils and Fertilizers with Hunters Garden Centre. West End Urban Garden Club 

Join us in exploring possibilities for creating a new community garden and other gardening spaces in the West End. We’ll also be organizing food and gardening workshops, a pollinator corridor, seed saving, and other activities. Each month we hold a discussion or present a short talk on a food related topic of interest to West Enders and others. January – Discussion: Tending Our Gardens – What worked and what didn’t during the last growing season. February – Creating a Pollinator Corridor in the West End,  March – Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going: Reviewing our 1st year and looking ahead. All ages welcome! “Bee Mine” A Valentine Papermaking Workshop

In this West End Urban Garden Club workshop with Deana Yereaux and Makiko Suzuki, we’ll learn how to make paper cards, embedded with pollinator seeds. Join West End Urban Garden Club and Village Vancouver for our Community Seed Sharing Library and Seed Savers Club. All ages welcome! Find out how the seed library works, learn about WE Food Network’s Garden Club and Village Vancouver’s seed libraries and seed saving efforts around the city, and meet fellow gardeners and seed savers. Pick up some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate seeds, and help put together seed packets for the library. We’re able to make seed donations to West End community gardens — please enquire!  DIY Creative Garden Markers

Forgetting what was planted where is a common problem faced by novice and expert gardeners alike! In this West End Urban Garden Club workshop with Rashmi GC, you’ll learn about different methods of making creative Garden Markers. Organic Gardening Intensive 

Want veggies this spring and summer? Crunchy home-grown lettuce and hearty kale and other greens? West End Urban Garden Club presents this two-part in-depth workshop covering the basics of planning, preparing and starting a food garden this Spring. You’ll learn some simple techniques for starting plants indoors and in the garden, tailored to your space. Be rewarded with the taste of freshly grown veggies this season! We’ll look at soil, fertilizing organically, watering, types of containers, different sun orientations and of course, what to grow in your space.

 

We’ll hone in on the veggies to start right now, the perfect ingredients for a salad!. Guided by instructor and gardener Rhiannon Johnson, you’ll come away with the knowledge to plant, grow, pick, and eat peas, and greens such as pac choi, beets, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, and kale right now! Enjoy the taste of freshly grown veggies this season! We’ll also learn about the best seeds to start saving, so that you can continue your garden season after season and why and how to harvest, dry, and store seeds. The community seed library will be present – participants will receive free seeds, sample soil amendments, and other goodies.
