“DIY” Accessories for Miniature Gardens

Miniature gardens are tiny green spaces that brighten up our surroundings. They can be made more cheerful by adding accessories. In this West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop with Rashmi GC you’ll learn about cute DIY projects that can be added to your mini gardens. All raw materials will be provided, and participants will have the opportunity to make an accessory and take it home. Suitable for adults, as well as kids 10 years and over who are accompanied by a caregiver. Advance registration required. FREE for Seniors (50 and over).

Community Potluck, Seed & Plant Swap & Workshop

Join West End Neighbourhood Food Network and Village Vancouver at our monthly family friendly gatherings. Bring something yummy and share some good food and conversation with neighbours. We’ll have a seed library there – you can get some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds or plants. Each month we present a mini-workshop on a different food and/or gardening related topic: April – Growing Food on Your Balcony, May – Growing Great Tomatoes, June – “Bee Herbs” – Basil, Bergamot and Borage. Advance registration encouraged.

Community Seed Sharing Library & Seed Saver Club

Join West End Urban Garden Club and Village Vancouver for our Community Seed Sharing Library and Seed Savers Club. All ages welcome! Find out how the seed library works, learn about WE Food Network’s Garden Club and Village Vancouver’s seed libraries and seed saving efforts around the city, and meet fellow gardeners and seed savers. Pick up some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate seeds, and help put together seed packets for the library. We’re able to make seed donations to West End community gardens — please enquire! Advance registration encouraged.

Healthy Soil For a Great Garden

In this joint Village Vancouver – West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop with Rhiannon Johnson, you’ll learn how to build your soil for a healthy vibrant veggie garden! Ever wonder what?s so special about soil? Or what you can do to make your soil even more fertile? Soil is the foundation of a terrific veggie garden ? it provides the nutrients, stability, and resilience for healthy plants for greater tolerance of storms, rain, heat, drought, disease, or pests and a bigger veggie yield out of your garden. Bring a 1 liter CLEAR container with a lid at least half full of YOUR garden soil for some simple tests to learn specifically about your garden?s soil and how to improve it with natural fertilizers, soil amendments, and gardening techniques for a more vibrant and resilient garden. We’ll also learn about composting, tailored to your space, and how it can supplement your garden’s health. Advance registration required. FREE for Seniors (50 and over).

Intro to Growing Japanese Herbs

Join West End Neighbourhood Food Network and Village Vancouver for an Introduction to Growing Japanese Herbs workshop presented by Tonari Gumi (Japanese Volunteer) Garden Club. You’ll learn about tasty and interesting Japanese herbs and how to grow them. Then sample these herbs in simple Japanese recipes and take home herb starts and seeds.  FREE for Seniors (50 and over).

Introduction to Fermenting

Are you intrigued about fermenting? Learn about several options in this West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop with Alyssa Kohlman from Fermentoring, including vegetable fermenting (sauerkraut, kimchi, and local seasonal ferments), water kefir, milk kefir, kombucha and vegetable kvass. Find out what’s involved, what equipment you need, and where to find supplies and ingredients. Learn about the health benefits, any potential risks, and how much time and space it takes. FREE for Seniors (50 and over).

Native Edibles Workshop and Walk

It can be easy to forget about the wealth of food that grows all around us. Come out and learn about edible plants that call our region home in this West End Neighbourhood Food Network workshop. Lori Snyder from the Metis Nation will discuss how to identify and harvest wild, edible, and medicinal plants in an ethical way. Please dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll have a community seed library present – you can get some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate some seeds. (Please come a little early.)  FREE for Seniors (50 and over).

West End Urban Garden Club

Join us in exploring possibilities for creating a new community garden and other gardening spaces in the West End. We’ll also be organizing food and gardening workshops, a pollinator corridor, seed saving, and other activities. Each month we hold a discussion or present a short talk on a food related topic of interest to West Enders and others. April -.Growing Nutritional Dense Foods – selecting plants recommended by Jo Robinson – “Eating on the Wild Side”, May – Permaculture, June – It’s time to start thinking about Planting Winter Veggies!.
