Community Potluck, Seed & Plant Swap & Workshop

Join West End Neighbourhood Food Network and Village Vancouver at our monthly family friendly gatherings. Bring something yummy and share some good food and conversation with neighbours. We’ll have a seed library there – pick up some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds or plants. Each month we present a mini-workshop on a different food and/or gardening related topic: July –  Fall and Winter Gardening, August – Saving Seeds. Advance registration encouraged.

West End Urban Garden Club

Join us in exploring possibilities for creating a new community garden and other gardening spaces in the West End. We’ll also be organizing food and gardening workshops, doing some seed saving, and engaging in other food and gardening related activities. In addition, our WeBee pollinators group will be giving out Mason bee houses (while supplies last). Each month we hold a discussion or present a short talk on a food related topic of interest to West Enders and others. July – Sharing Gardening Tips (WEUGC Gardening Calendars available!), August – Concepts in Year Round Gardening.  All ages welcome! Advance registration encouraged.

Community Seed Sharing Library & Seed Savers Club

Join West End Urban Garden Club and Village Vancouver at our Seed Savers Club. All ages welcome! Find out how the library works, learn about WE Food Network’s Garden Club and Village Vancouver’s seed libraries and seed saving efforts around the city, and meet fellow gardeners and seed savers and share tips. Pick up some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate seeds, and help put together seed packets for the library. We’re able to make seed donations to West End community gardens — please enquire! Advance registration encouraged.

Introduction to Vertical Gardening NEW!  

In this Village Vancouver and West End Urban Garden Club with Dr. Yael Stav, we’ll review the opportunities for, and benefits of, growing food in vertical gardens in an urban setting. We’ll discuss the different systems and technologies available for vertical gardening, and talk about  the principles of setting up a successful vertical food garden on fences, walls, and balconies, including watering, weight, light and plant choice considerations. We’ll have a communityseed library there – pick up some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds.

Introduction to Seed Saving

Village Vancouver and West End Urban Garden Club  present the basics of saving seeds with Ross Moster. We’ll talk about the best seeds to start saving, and discuss the easiest seeds to save in small gardens and why and how to harvest, dry and store seeds, as well as open pollinated seeds vs. hybrids, self- and cross-pollinators, challenges to saving seeds in urban areas, and other aspects of saving seeds. We’ll have a community seed library there – pick up some free seeds for your garden, or swap or donate seeds.
